Sortilège was a soundscape created for a group exhibition of the same name at Nutshell Studios in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire curated by Patricia Brien & Viviana Rossi-Caffell. Rather than following and fitting in with any particular artwork I tried to stay true to the title, taking a random group of objects metaphorically throwing them into the air and ‘divining’ a pattern and ‘meaning’ from how they landed. I worked very quickly collecting sounds from household objects, scrap metal and from various old field recordings including bells from Gloucester Cathedral. Programmed, performed & processed using a Digitakt sampler straight to tape. No overdubs.

About the artwork:

‘Diamond in the Rough’, 2023, is part of a series of works deriving its title from the legend of the Genie’s Lamp.
Originating from pre-Islamic mythology, Genies were initially associated with shapeshifting, possession and madness. In later Western popular representation and under the influence of Orientalism, they appeared in Western literature and film as wish-granting creatures living in magic lamps or bottles. Hidden in the depths of the Cave of Wonders, the Genie’s lamp can only be found by an individual known as the Diamond in the Rough: a person gifted by exceptional qualities and talents but unaware of them, lacking refinement and social skills.
Drawing a parallel with the condition of the unknown artist and their work in their potential of becoming tangibly valuable only when found by the right hands in the Art World, ‘Diamond in the Rough’ draws playful connections with objects of desire, wishes and chance.
